Can we cope with Americanisms?
Earlier this year, an interesting article appeared on the BBC News website which caught our attention. It highlights how certain American terms and expressions have entered our day-to-day language. To be fair, it's something that's been going on ever since 1766 when the United States gained its independence.
Given the widespread use of the internet and the inflow of American music, films and television programmes, it's no surprise to us to find that this is happening, perhaps far more than it used to. Depending on your viewpoint, these 'Americanisms' are either welcome additions to our ever-evolving language or things to be guarded against at every opportunity.
Here at magic-spell.biz, we firmly believe in the evolution of the English language. That's what makes English so exciting and vibrant. Over many centuries we have absorbed different words from many different parts of the world. We also recognise that there are many different variations of English depending on which country you're in. What's important is that any words are used accurately, in the right context, and suitable for the intended audience.
